Concluding Spring 2010

11 05 2010

We hope that everyone had a great spring semester!  VOX will be working this summer on planning some great events for fall, so keep checking back for updates!

In the meantime, you can follow us on facebook or check out the twitter for Michigan Planned Parenthood Advocates.  Follow them on twitter to get updates about what is going on in pro-choice Michigan.

VOX finished up the year by bringing some of our members to Lansing and talking to our local representatives and senator.  We’d like to thank them for their time, and for listening to our voices.  (Below: us by the capitol building)

We hope that everyone’s summer starts out with lots of fun!  See you soon with more news and events!

Take Back the Night!

29 03 2010

This April, WMU will celebrate another year of this excellent event:  Take Back the Night!

THURSDAY, APRIL 15, 2010

Two RSO’s, FIRE (Fighting Ignorance and Rape through Education) and VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood are going to be bringing in two wonderful guest speakers this year.  We are honored to welcome Maria Markus from WMU and Sherry Brockway from the YWCA.

Take Back The Night will be held in rooms 208 and 209 of the Bernhard Center on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 7 pm.  We are also excited to introduce a one-time self-defense class, which will start at 6 pm in the same rooms (208 and 209 of the Bernhard Center) directly before the event.

A little history: Take Back the Night is an event where women (and men) speak out about sexual assault and reclaim the right to live in a safe atmosphere free of sexual assault and intimidation.  For a more extensive history please visit http://www.takebackthenight.org/history.html.

For more information on what WMU is doing to end sexual assault, please visit FIRE’s website. http://www.wmich.edu/shc/hpae/sap/sapinfo.htm

Now is the time, please pass this information onto your friends and support WMU’s fight to end sexual assault!

Thanks so much to our amazing President Lindsey Williams for putting so much effort into this event!

We hope to see you there!

- Your friends at VOX

Attention: Time Change!

9 03 2010

There has been a time change for our “Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby” event!

“I <3 Female Orgasm” is having an event in the Bernhard Center at 7:00, so we hope that you’ll come join us for coffee afterwards at Mugshots.

So, the new time:  9:00 at Mugshots!

See you there!

So Far this Spring

25 02 2010

So far this spring, VOX has been busy planning some events.  Our next event will be:

“Lets Talk About Sex, Baby!”

It will be held, Monday, March 15, 2010 at 9 pm at Mugshots (hopefully).  We will update if any of that information changes.  We are teaming up with OUTspoken, another hard-working RSO on campus to bring Nancy King in to have an open forum for all your questions and lots of answers.  Come grab a cup of coffee and join us!

Also, this year Kalamazoo hosted the annual Michigan VOX conference.  It went super well, and it was excellent to network with and learn from all the other groups at other schools in Michigan.

Welcome, Spring 2010!

13 01 2010

Happy New Year to all of you from VOX at WMU.

This semester, meetings will continue to be held on Monday nights at 7:00 pm in the Bernhard Center, this semester in room 207.  We have many exciting things planned for the semester and we want all of YOU to be involved!  Contact us to find out how you can be involved, or show up to any of our upcoming meetings.  (Our first meeting will be canceled on January 18th to honor Martin Luther King Jr.!)

A Review!

10 01 2010

The students of VOX are excited to be starting a new semester at WMU.

Here are some of our proud accomplishments of Fall 2009:

  • We hosted a bake sale fundraiser in Sangren Hall.  The money we raised went towards other activities we can do in our group.  The treats were tasty, cute, and Halloween-themed!
  • We participated in a Virtual Lobby Day through Planned Parenthood.  It was awesome to see the huge turnout on the internet as people used technology for their pro-choice voices to be heard.
  • We participated in the campaign for Real Sex Ed.  This year’s focus was real comprehensive sexual education, an important part of a healthy, happy society.
  • Continuing from our work over the summer, we further advocated around campus for Health Care Reform, and of course, for women to be included in that important change.
  • We also hosted a Pure Romance party!  We had a great number of ladies show up for the fun, food, and sex toys!
  • As usual, we got to reach out to WMU’s student body through numerous tabling events in the Bernhard Center.  This continues to be a great way to spread information and get more people involved.  Stop by and see us any time!
  • Our final group meeting in December gladly hosted our friend from Planned Parenthood of South Central Michigan during a very comprehensive sex ed training!  It’s so important in this growing world that we combat misinformation by educating ourselves.   Thanks to Meghan for coming and sharing your time with our group!

It was a great semester with some amazing, enthusiastic new group members.
